Why Am I Still Tight? 5-minute Body Pattern Check (Free PDF)

“Physiotherapy, strength and movement education—without reducing your body to one painful spot.”

About this free guide

Long desk blocks can make your day feel smaller and more fixed. A useful first step is noticing when tension shows up, then adding simple movement variety before it becomes the end-of-day default.

Inside this free PDF guide:

  • Identify your primary workday posture and tension patterns.
  • Choose practical, desk-friendly movement breaks that fit real schedules.
  • Learn when individual physiotherapy guidance is the appropriate next step.

This is an educational reflection, not a posture screen, diagnosis or personalized prescription. Your optional workday answers, name and email are saved when you request email delivery; everyone receives the same guide.

Newsletters are a separate, optional choice. Download the PDF without a form · Privacy details

Step 1 of 4 · Body Pattern CheckWorkday Demands

How does your typical workday look?

Reflect on how much sitting, standing and movement your day includes. This does not generate a personalized recommendation.

Physiotherapy, strength and movement education—without reducing your body to one painful spot.

If your neck and shoulders feel better after stretching, massage, cracking, or dry needling—but the tightness keeps returning—your body may not need a harder stretch. It may need you to notice the pattern that keeps recreating the tension.

Why Does the Tightness Keep Coming Back?

Muscles rarely work in isolation. Your neck and shoulders respond to how you breathe, where your screen sits, how long you hold one position, how much strength and endurance your upper body has, and how guarded your system feels.

Temporary relief is not useless—it simply may not change the reason your body keeps choosing the same strategy.

What Is a “Body Pattern”?

A body pattern is a repeated strategy your system uses to get through a task. It is not a flaw, a diagnosis, or proof that your posture is “bad.” It is simply a habit your body has learned.

  • Lift or brace your shoulders when concentrating
  • Hold your breath or breathe mostly into the upper chest
  • Turn toward a screen placed on one side
  • Push your head forward as you become tired
  • Stay in one position until discomfort forces you to move

The 4 Tension Signatures

  • The Breathing Pattern: Shallow breathing, breath-holding, or breathing predominantly into the upper chest during intense work sprints.
  • The Guarding Pattern: Raised shoulders, clenched jaw, or feeling constantly “on alert” even when sitting back.
  • The Workstation Pattern: Repeated asymmetrical turning, reaching for distant mice, or angling down toward a laptop on your lap.
  • The Endurance Pattern: Symptoms that build later in the day as your spinal postural stabilizers fatigue.

Your 5-Minute Pattern Reset Routine

  1. 360° Breathing (5 slow breaths): Place your hands around your lower ribs. Inhale and feel the ribs expand into the front, sides, and back. Exhale slowly without forcing your ribs down.
  2. Supported Thoracic Rotation (5 each side): Sit tall with arms crossed over your chest. Keep hips forward and gently rotate through your upper thoracic spine, letting your eyes follow.
  3. Wall Slide with Reach (6 to 8 reps): Place forearms on a wall. Slide upward only as far as comfortable while gently reaching into the wall. Breathe throughout.
  4. Workstation Reset (60 seconds): Center your primary display, support your forearms, and bring frequently used items closer.
  5. Re-Check: Slowly turn your head and raise your arms. Notice if movement feels smoother or freer.

Try This for 7 Days

  • Day 1–2: Notice when your tension pattern begins during your workday.
  • Day 3–4: Use the 5-minute reset once during your afternoon block.
  • Day 5–7: Change one ergonomic or movement trigger and track how your neck responds.

When a General Guide Is Not Enough

Seek an individual clinical assessment if symptoms are severe, worsening, linked to a recent injury, or accompanied by persistent numbness, tingling, weakness, balance changes, severe headache, or dizziness.
